Find out the facts about skilled trades

The Building and Construction Trades Showcase 2010, held on November 27, was hosted by the Workforce Planning Board of York Region. The showcase was provided for career seekers to get an opportunity to meet with colleges, unions, training centres and government resources to answer your questions and investigate opportunities to get you started on a career in the skilled trades.

Every skilled trade apprenticeship has a pathway to get there. Find out the pathway, understand the qualifications, what education you need, the length of time as an apprentice and how the apprenticeship program works. Learn about the Red Seal designation.

What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is an agreement and partnership between an employer and you, and requires both of you to register with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). An apprenticeship is paid on-the-job training, work experience and technical training in a trade. Over the training period, 80% of the time will be on-the-job with a qualified tradesperson and 20% of the time spent at a college or an approved training organization. Once completed, you will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification, issued by the MTCU. This is called your "Ticket" and means you are now a highly skilled tradesperson or journeyman as certified apprentices are known.

It is up to you to find the employer who wants to take you on as an apprentice, however there is help available such as Apprenticesearch.com or Tradeability.ca. A pre-apprenticeship training course will help you gain knowledge in the trade and that means you can bring value to an employer right away.

Time to get started. The resources are available, the people and organizations are here to help. It's up to you to get them working for you to get your career going. View the videos that are interesting to you. Visit websites, call an employment service provider, start searching for an employer who will want you as an apprentice.

This is a good place to start. It's up to you.
