Find Out More About a Career in Building & Trades

Every skilled trade apprenticeship has a pathway to get there. Learn about the pathway, understand the qualifications, what education you need and the length of time as an apprentice before becoming a certified journey person.

What is an Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is an agreement and partnership between an employer and you, and requires both of you to register with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development. An apprenticeship is paid while completing on-the-job training, work experience and technical training in a trade. Over the training period, 80% of the time is spent on-the-job with a qualified tradesperson and 20% of the time spent at a college or an approved training organization. Once completed, you will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship or a Certificate of Qualification, issued by the ministry. This is called your "Ticket" and means you are now a highly skilled trades person or journey person as certified apprentices are known.

It is up to you to find the employer who wants to take you on as an apprentice, however there is help available such as:
